This book focusses on inter- and intracultural differences in academic writing and ways of understanding. The example of primary and lower secondary history textbooks has been chosen as a rich source of cultural viewpoints, and in particular the topic of 'The Romans' as part of a common European heritage. Textbooks (and their related curricula) are examined in terms of their writing styles, the kinds of skills demanded in pupil tasks and overall objectives. Researchers working in different European countries: Austria, England, France, Germany (2 different Lander), Ireland and Italy present case-studies of 'The Romans' from their own country. It is thus possible to track cultural differences closely, and the intercultural expertise of the team also adds an informing dimension here. The writing team came together for a conference in February 2002 at the University of Bath to present and discuss their research. The book can thus be said to build on an interactive understanding of inter- and intracultural difference.\

Statistics indicate that students in conservative Christian schools earn higher standardized test scores in mathematics, reading, science, and writing compared to their public school counterparts, while many are criticized for using curricular materials deemed inferior in quality and for employing uncertified and ill-trained teachers. This study investigates the effectiveness of Christian-published science textbooks in preparing students for college-level science courses as measured by the Science Reasoning subtest of the ACT college entrance examination. A questionnaire was sent to conservative Christian high schools in five Midwest states which are affiliated with the American Association of Christian Schools, Association of Christian Schools International, and Oral Roberts University Educational Fellowship. Information gathered on the schools, teachers, facilities, and ACT Science Reasoning scores and the resulting descriptive statistics provide a sketch of the typical Midwest Christian high school. Hypothesis testing resulted in acceptance of the Null Hypothesis: There is no difference between the mean ACT Science Reasoning scores of Midwest Christian high schools using Christian-published science textbooks as compared to those using secular-published science textbooks. Multiple regression analysis on the two publishers represented by the sample statistics, A Beka and Bob Jones University Press, showed no significant difference in the effectiveness of one publisher over the other. Analysis of the one open-ended question asking why each school chooses to use the type of publisher it does led to the issues of worldview instruction and academic rigor as the deciding factors for the selection of one type of publisher over the other.

The somewhat paradoxical result has been that there is perhaps less respect for the scientist than in the days of Huxley and Tyndall, when science had no footing in the schools at all. Few would be bold enough to hazard the assertion that there are signs in any class of British society of the scientific habit of mind. The cause cannot lie in the teaching of Classics to the boys of the Public Schools, for these form but a limited class, and for a good many years have enjoyed access to science teaching. I suggest that the causes rather lie in the strong reaction provoked by the extraordinarilyone-sided results produced in the specially aided schools, which devoted themselves to Science in the last years of the reign of Victoria, and to the narrow formalism of much of the teaching. It was discovered that man cannot live and grow on science alone, and the revolt perhaps went too far, until the Great War forcibly reminded the nation that things were not well. It ought to be possible to think out a general education in which all will be able to gain some elementary insight into the workings of the physical universe and to come to understand the meaning of scientific method, and the point of view of the scientist. So much is necessary if in the future vi FOREWORD we are all to understand one another. It ought to be possible also so to teach Science that those who learp it do not become intolerant and unsympathetic, but realize that, though it is a necessary part, it is only a part of the modern citizens outfit for life. This book is written by one who has realized this, and who knows how to teach with breadth and without exclusiveness. Its pages give information and provoke curiosity at many points they suggest that there are other realms of knowledge of a quite different sort. Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students’ informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories --- an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes.
